FREISTIN ER LONGD

All over the world and throughout time women have died because of pregnancy and childbirth. The Faroe Islands are no exception. Several decades ago, the infrastructure was far from its current state. When births became difficult, getting help in time was much more challenging than now. Most families have stories about relatives who died giving birth and how it affected their family narrative and thriving for generations. Times have changed. The Faroe Islands are a modern society. However, the stories of the dead women have affected their people, and they deserve to be remembered. There are many monuments in the Faroe Islands, but none of them are there to commemorate the women who gave their lives for later generations. Three women in the town of Fuglafjørður have started a project that will give these stories a physical expression. The Municipality of Fuglafjørður is going to grant a part of the funds and has devoted a green area for the monument in the town centre. Social activities already take place in this area, such has singing, playing, outdoor church services, and concerts. The idea is that the monument should be in a space where life is being lived – a life that these women were bereft of. PRACTICAL MATTERS Below, there is a photo of the area that the municipal authorities according to plan have allocated to the project. Note that this is subject to change and that preparations will be made in co-operation with the Fuglafjørður Municipality.
